LAS LOCAS COMEDY: 2025 MID-YEAR RECAP OF LAUGHTER AND LOCANESS

As we reach the midpoint of 2025, Las Locas Comedy continues to shine as a beacon of humor and representation in Chicago’s comedy scene. Founded by Janice Rodriguez, this Latina-led collective has been delivering high-energy performances that celebrate diverse voices and experiences

January: Kicking Off with Laughter

The year began with a bang on January 2nd at the Laugh Factory Chicago, featuring the “Chingona Comedy Hour.” Hosted by Janice Rodriguez, the lineup included Jessi Realz, Audrey Jonas, Soli Santos, Hilary Jimenez, and headliner Jesnaira Baez, setting a vibrant tone for the year ahead.

We kept the month going strong with our debut at BABS Comedy Club in Forest Park and a sold out night of Spanish-language comedy at Sabado Night Laughs.

February: Celebrating Love and Laughter

February saw Las Locas Comedy celebrating its 8th anniversary with a special edition of the Chingona Comedy Hour on February 6th. The show featured a stellar lineup, including Jess Martinez, Audrey Jonas, Soli Santos, Hilary Jimenez, and headliner Jesnaira Baez.

We then celebrated Val/Galentine’s Day weekend with special showcases at The Drop in South Bend and another sold out show at Sabado Night Laughs at Surge Billiards in Logan Square.

We also performed at The Revival in the South Loop and debuted our new show featuring 40+ women comics at Delightfully Unbothered at The Lincoln Lodge.

March: Women’s History Month Highlights

March was packed with events honoring Women’s History Month. On March 6th, the Chingona Comedy Hour featured comedians Hannah Roeschlein, Hoja Lopez, Cynthia Levin, Cecilia Gonzalez, and headliner Kellye Howard.

Mid-month, Sabado Night Laughs returned on March 15th at The Pocket at Surge Logan Square, with a lineup including Jayson Acevedo and Chloe Mikala.

Later, on March 26th, “Delightfully Unbothered” (formerly “Women of the Night”) showcased comedians over 40, featuring Megan Metzger, Isabel Amaya, Brandi Alexander, Lia Berman, and headliner Patti Vasquez.

April: Fundraising and Future Plans

April 3rd’s Chingona Comedy Hour at the Laugh Factory Chicago featured headliner Nana Rodriguez, bringing together top Latina/e/x and BIPOC comedians.

On April 19th, the “1/2 Way to the Fest Fundraiser Comedy Show” at Lincoln Lodge aimed to raise funds for the upcoming 4th Annual Latina Comedy Festival, scheduled for October 2nd-4th, 2025.

We closed out the month with an all Spanish language Sabado Night Laughs and another fun noche at Delightfully Unbothered.

Looking Ahead

With a strong start to 2025, Las Locas Comedy continues to amplify underrepresented voices in comedy. As they gear up for the Latina Comedy Festival this fall, audiences can look forward to more nights filled with laughter and empowerment.

LAS LOCAS COMEDY: 2024 WAS A YEAR TO REMEMBER

As we bid farewell to 2024, Las Locas Comedy reflects on a year filled with laughter, growth, and unforgettable moments. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights that made this year extraordinary.

7th Anniversary Celebration

In February, we marked a significant milestone—our 7th anniversary. The celebration featured a lineup of our #locas4life comedians, delivering performances that had the audience laughing all night long. This event was a testament to the hard work, dedication, and support that have fueled our success over the years.

Chingona Comedy Hour

Throughout the year, our monthly “Chingona Comedy Hour” at Laugh Factory Chicago continued to showcase top Latina/e/x comedians and honorary locas from various backgrounds. Each show was a night of no-holds-barred laughter, celebrating the badass women in our lives. Starting in September, we moved to the 7pm slot at the club.

Sabado Night Laughs

Every 3rd Saturday of the month Sabado Night Laughs at The Pocket at Surge Billiards Logan Square has continued to grow. The show has regularly sold out and featured hilarious comedians from across the country in an intimate venue. We’ve loved the energy of the loca crowds at this funny AF showcase!

3rd Annual Latina Comedy Festival

From October 3rd to 5th, we hosted the growing 3rd Annual Latina Comedy Festival across multiple venues in Chicago, including Laugh Factory in Lakeview, The Den Theatre in Wicker Park, Chicago Dramatists in River West, and Lincoln Lodge and Surge Billiards in Logan Square. The festival featured a diverse lineup of the country’s top comedians, highlighting the rich tapestry of Latina humor and storytelling. We had multiple sold out showcases and are already making big plans for 2025!

WBEZ Holiday Comedy Event

In November, we co-hosted with local NPR station WBEZ an evening of comedy with 2 special showcases at Robert’s Westside in Forest Park. The shows were a success and headlined by Chicago favorite Gwen La Roka (HBOMax).

Looking Ahead

As we gear up for 2025, we’re ready to bring even more comedy, culture, and connection to Chicago and beyond. Our mission remains the same: to uplift Latina/e/x voices in comedy, make space for diverse stories, and bring people together through the power of laughter.

Thank you to every performer, audience member, and supporter who made 2024 an incredible year for Las Locas Comedy. We couldn’t have done it without you. Cheers to more laughs and locaness in 2025!

Latina Comedy Festival Returns to Chicago for an Exciting Third Year

The team behind Las Locas Comedy, Chicago’s only monthly Latina stand-up comedy show, is back with an expanded 3rd Annual Latina Comedy Festival from October 3rd-5th, 2024, across multiple venues in Chicago.

Chicago, IL September 9, 2024 – The Latina Comedy Festival, produced by Las Locas Comedy, returns to Chicago from October 3rd-5th, 2024 with expanded showcases at multiple venues across the city including Laugh Factory in Lakeview, The Den Theatre in Wicker Park, Chicago Dramatists in River West and Lincoln Lodge and Surge Billiards in Logan Square. The festival will feature the best Latina standup comedic talent from across the country including Chicago native Gwen La Roka (HBO Max), New Yorker by way of Puerto Rico, dancer, actor and comedian Suni Reyes (New York Comedy Club), and San Antonio comedian and TikTok start Chona-E (LOL San Antonio). A panel of industry representatives and comedians recently reviewed comedian submissions and selected 45 amazing performers from across North America to perform at this year’s festival.

In an industry where Latinas represent less than 1% of comics booked at comedy clubs across the country (The Comedy Club Database), Las Locas Comedy has been committed to elevating diverse female voices in comedy. Celebrating its seventh year, Las Locas Comedy continues to expand their programming to include this annual festival to showcase comics from across the country – a feat made possible by the network they’ve built across the country with Latina comics from cities such as L.A., Austin, San Antonio, New York, Denver, and Miami.

The first iteration of the festival in August 2022, showcased 18 locally-based Latina and nonbinary Latinx/e comics performing short, rapid-fire sets at the Lincoln Lodge in Logan Square. In addition to our flagship ‘Marathon Show’ at Lincoln Lodge which will happen at 5pm on Saturday, October 5th in this year’s festival, producers have grown the festival to include 7 total showcases which will give selected performers multiple opportunities to perform to a Chicago audience.

Our three day festival, happening in the heart of Hispanic Heritage Month, will also include networking events as well as educational workshops for the comedians to grow their craft and connect with each other and industry representatives. Audience members will have an amazing opportunity to see heavy hitters and up and coming Latina comedians from across the country in talent-packed showcases. The festival’s highlight happens on Saturday, October 5th at Chicago Dramatists with a special headlining showcase by Marcella Arguello, star of the HBO/Max comedy special Bitch, Grow up!. Full performer lineups and individual showcase tickets are now on sale via the Latina Comedy Festival website.

Las Locas Comedy believes the fight for representation creates a ripple effect in the comedy scene, propelling underrepresented talent to national comedy clubs and beyond. “There is so much amazing Latina comedy talent here in Chicago and across the country. Showcasing that talent through the Latina Comedy Festival platform will give comedians exposure to new audiences as well as introduce festival attendees to comedians they have not yet had the chance to see,” said Las Locas Comedy founder and Executive Producer of Latina Comedy Festival, Janice V. Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, and their crew of “Locas” have proven time and again that there is a market for comedy written and performed by Latinas in an industry that continues to be dominated by a white male narrative. Five out of 6 of last year’s showcases were completely sold out and we received local and national news coverage. The positive feedback from last year’s event and the growth of this year’s Latina Comedy Festival continues to prove that audiences want entertainment from diverse voices.

Showcase tickets and performer information are available at LatinaComedyFestival.com/tickets and more “loca” content can be found on social media at @laslocascomedy and @latinacomedyfestival.

TEACHERS GONE BAD DELIVERS THE SPRING BREAK PARTY

We can still hear the laughter from our recent Teachers Gone Bad comedy showcase at Laugh Factory Chicago! Produced by Mind Twist Comedy our of San Antonio, TX, with promotional support from Las Locas Comedy, this event was a riotous celebration of humor, wit, and unapologetically adult-themed comedy that left the audience in stitches. For those unfamiliar, Teachers Gone Bad is not your run-of-the-mill comedy production. It’s a mind-twisting experience crafted specifically for the “open-minded” teaching community and comedy enthusiasts who appreciate boundary-pushing humor. Featuring a talented pool of educators-turned-comedians from across the country, this show delved into the quirky, absurd, and relatable aspects of teaching and life beyond the classroom. The spring break showcase on Monday, March 25th, at 5 pm was a hit from start to finish. The lineup of performers brought their A-game, delivering punchlines that ranged from clever observations to downright hilarious anecdotes. From navigating the complexities of school bureaucracy to poking fun at the quirks of students, every moment onstage was a comedic gem. It’s worth noting that Teachers Gone Bad is not for the easily offended or those seeking family-friendly entertainment. This show embraced its adult-oriented nature with gusto, earning uproarious laughter and applause from the audience who embraced the irreverent humor with enthusiasm. To everyone who attended and contributed to the success of Teachers Gone Bad, thank you for making it an unforgettable evening of laughter and camaraderie. For those who missed out, fear not – stay tuned for future announcements and showcases.
